Georgetown Cross Country History

Coach Vern Hawkins, 1931-2023

Vern Hawkins, AKA "Coach," was a 1949 graduate of Anderson High School and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2006.  In high school, he was the 1949 OHSAA State Track Runner-Up in the one mile race.  He was also a defensive end on the 1949 undefeated Anderson football team.  After high school, Coach attended the University of Cincinnati. He competed on their Cross Country and Track teams before and after serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.  In 1950, he placed second in the Cincinnati Thanksgiving Day 6 mile run with a time of 30:29.

Coach Hawkins established the Georgetown Cross Country program in 1958.  He was the head coach of the Cross Country and Track teams at Georgetown until 1996, but continued to support the programs throughout his life.  During this time, he coached seven individual State Champions in Track and Cross Country.  Coach's 1969 Georgetown Cross Country team won the State Championship.  His 1968, 1970 and 1971 Cross Country teams finished runner up at State.  Coach also had multiple District and Regional championship teams in Track and Cross Country over his career.  Coach Hawkins was inducted into the Ohio Track and Cross Country Hall of Fame in 1986.  He is also a member of the Brown County Athletic Hall of Fame and the Georgetown High School Hall of Fame.  Coach worked for many years as an OHSAA Track and Cross Country official in our community.  Coach Hawkins had a positive life long impact on generations of Georgetown students and the Brown County community.
